COVID-19, RSV and the flu are straining health care systems - two epidemiologists explain what the 'triple threat' means for children
In the U.S., the winter respiratory virus season started earlier than usual this year. The CDC and other health experts are warning of the so-called “triple threat” of respiratory illness from RSV, influenza – or the seasonal flu – and COVID-19. RSV infections tend to follow a similar seasonal pattern as the flu, peaking in winter months. What’s more, infants younger than 6 months – who are most at risk of severe disease – are still too young to be vaccinated against influenza or COVID-19.

Northwestern Medicine investigators continue to study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health and society, from maternal vaccinations and antibody response to reducing burnout amongst healthcare workers and identifying novel therapeutic targets. Pregnant individuals who were vaccinated against COVID-19 during pregnancy demonstrated higher levels of maternal and umbilical cord blood antibodies compared to after initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, according to a Northwestern Medicine study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Favorable outcomes of infants born after maternal COVID-19 during pregnancy
Study: Infants born following SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy. Preterm neonates and newborns of those with peripartum SARS-CoV-2 infection or mothers without antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were excluded. Serum antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were determined in mothers and neonates within 48 hours of delivery. A total of 106 infants were born to mothers diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection two or more weeks before delivery.

COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy protects infants from SARS-CoV-2 infection

In the first six months of life, 3.1% of infants tested SARS-CoV-2-positive, and 10 had to hospitalize. The crude incidence of SARS-CoV-2 test positivity was lower among infants born to double-vaccinated mothers than those with non-vaccinated mothers during the Delta wave.
